Arabians are our YourDressage Breed of the Month for July!  One of the oldest horse breeds on earth, and the influence for many other breeds, these elegant horses are easily recognizable with their delicate faces and high tail carriage.  They excel in many sports, particularly endurance riding.

Dressage enthusiasts who ride Arabians have the opportunity to earn special awards through the Adequan®/USDF All-Breeds Awards as Arabian Horse Association, North American Shagya-Arabian Society, and Performance Shagya-Arabian Registry are all Participating Organizations.

We recently asked our social media followers to share photos of their Arabians, and let us know what makes these horses so special. Below, you can see their photos and stories.  Keep an eye out for the second part of this gallery  next week, and the third part at the end of July 2021!

Submitted by Ashley C. – AM Hamlet, 12 year old purebred gelding. I bought him as a 4 year old, 2 months under saddle. We spent five years competing in competitive trail and endurance. He completed every ride entered, including two three day 100 mile rides and was champion of several 50 and 60 mile rides. While we were always doing some dressage training and showing, last year we switched to it full time. We’re now two thirds of our way to my bronze medal and moving up to third level. Love the versatility and athleticism of this breed!

Jenni pictured here with her precious, Australia-bred, trained, and imported purebred Arabian Mare winning unanimous National Champion Sport Horse after competing and taking home top 10s in Dressage at the Arabian Sport Horse Nationals in 2018! Jenni’s devotion to the breed goes beyond our US Border and I am thrilled she is here with her extensive knowledge!

National dressage pony cup small horse year end champion in third and fourth level amateur and reserve in amateur freestyle in 2019. Has won numerous high score awards at open dressage shows. Currently competing psg. What he lacks in size he makes up for in work ethic, personality and heart. I’m an amateur owner who has trained him myself (with the help of my coach but I’m the only one that has ridden him since he was 4 years old) from training level to psg working towards the i1 and Grand Prix

Submitted by Charma F. – This is my stallion Allemar by Allience. I bred, raised and trained him myself with help. He is my first dressage horse and I didn’t start riding until I was 40 years old. I got my bronze, silver and one score towards my gold until he had a tendon tear and I had breast cancer and we had to stop. I still have him and he is 27yo. He wasn’t broke to saddle until he was 9 years old and in the last six years I have earned my bronze medal on him, multiple national reserve championships in dressage, top tens, regional championships, etc. Recently was Region 12 fourth level champion. He gives his all to me every ride. I love him, quirks and all!
Submitted by Cindy G. – This is my my boy JP Moonlight Mirage. I love the challenge of Dressage and am fortunate enough to have a great trainer and coach. As his owner I’m coming along in my riding skills. 2020 he and my trainer were Champion Arabian Dressage Training Level Open. 2012 Top National Top 10 Sporthorse in hand gelding 2 year old. We continue to learn together, and I continue to take lessons. Occasionally as time allows we do light trail riding. My baby boy, my first Arabian, that I owned.

Submitted by Dawn L. – FCF Oberons Vanity, my homebred Arabian stallion who was the 2020 USDF All-Breeds Champion at Intermediare I (Open) with his trainer/rider. He competed in DSHB classes at Dressage at Devon when he was just started under saddle as a young horse, in 2015 he earned the highest scores and placings of any Arabian-bred stallion to ever participate in the 70 day Stallion Performance Test in North America, and now he is being systematically developed towards a goal of competing at Grand Prix. Because of his exceptional temperament and rideability, he competed one season with a young rider and has served as a schoolmaster for a few riders to give them a feel for upper level movements. While many people cite the aesthetic qualities of Arabians, it was their people pleasing temperaments combined with their handy athleticism that drew me to them and inspired me to start a small breeding program for sport. Submitted by Elizabeth B. – To all those women who are discouraged to keep riding/showing while raising children and managing a demanding career, this mare is a testament that it can be done. She had many years of stops and starts while my children were young. Lots of pasture time but she patiently put up with me with an occasional ride. She only had 90 days of training when I bought her. So you understand where we started from. It has been the last three years that I have ridden her consistently to get her back to a show ring with a well preserved 24 year body and the energy and spirit of a 8 year old. I love the resilience of the Arabian breed and the fire of a mare. Never give up

She was unfortunately trained by someone who did not know how to work with a horse like her and I’ve spent the last 3 years really getting her to trust and blossom. The thing about Arabians is that they have longevity, smarts, movement, and great personalities. An Arabian will always try to please and they truly do have a people pleasing personality. Although showing is something I do sporadically, my mare has taught me to be a sensitive, quiet, and to think outside the box rider, as we continue to move up the levels.

She’s always been an overachiever! After surgery, she’s now back to riding and, God willing, will be showing at East Coast Championships and Sport Horse Nationals in SHIH, dressage, and SHUS!
