The USDF Instructor/Trainer Development Program is designed to provide education and resources for instructors seeking certification (and those already certified). Here, meet and learn about the benefits of the program from two instructors who have done it themselves!

Constant Inquiry

By Kathryn Kostenbader

My inspiration for beginning my journey to certification through the USDF Instructor/Trainer Development Program started in northern Iowa in the mid-90s, when I attended a lungeing clinic taught by Gerhardt Politz. At the time, I was unaware that there was an instructor certification program, and that this program taught how to classically train a horse and rider.

Since then, I have been teaching lessons and progressing in my own riding skills, all while teaching full-time in the public school system. In this time, I have also become a USDF ‘L’ Graduate. Now retired, I finally have the time and understanding, through constant inquiry, of the important role held by certified instructors. The USDF Instructor/Trainer Development Program has boosted my confidence in my training and teaching abilities, and I plan to continue up the levels and further my education with this informative program.

What I have learned from this program is that there are many qualified, experienced instructors in the dressage world to learn from and network with. The result of this education is an understanding of safe, progressive training methods for both horse and rider. Our horses deserve the best, and the systematic development of these skills is paramount to having a supple, sound horse, far into its later years. I would also like to develop a healthy, independent, thinking rider; one who is empathetic, knowledgeable, and happy to be in the company of these noble animals. This is what I hope to convey in my teachings.

Classic and Correct

By Ashley Laughlin

I was motivated to pursue certification through the USDF Instructor/Trainer Development Program because I’m passionate about both riding and teaching, and I wanted to ensure that I was offering my students a foundation rooted in correct classical principles. The certification process represents a high standard of professionalism and knowledge, and I felt it was important to hold myself accountable to those standards.

Additionally, I saw the program as an opportunity for personal and professional growth – to deepen my understanding of dressage and refine my ability to communicate concepts clearly to students. Ultimately, I want to be part of the positive development of riders and horses, and earning this certification is a way to demonstrate that commitment to the broader dressage community.

The USDF Instructor/Trainer Development Program has significantly impacted my development, both as a rider and as an instructor. It pushed me to refine not only my technical knowledge of the training scale and theory, but also the way I communicate that knowledge to students. One of the biggest breakthroughs for me was learning to recognize and address the root cause of training issues, rather than just correcting symptoms. For example, in one of the workshops, I gained a deeper understanding of how inconsistency in connection often stems from the rider’s inability to maintain a steady tempo – a concept I now consistently incorporate into my teaching.

The program also helped me become more intentional in how I structure lessons and build progression for both horses and riders. It boosted my confidence, especially in delivering feedback that is both honest and encouraging. And perhaps, just as importantly, it connected me with a supportive community of professionals who are committed to the same high standards of education and horsemanship. That sense of shared purpose has been incredibly motivating.

The instruction throughout the program was exceptional. The faculty created such a comfortable, professional, and supportive learning environment that it made the entire experience not only educational but also truly enjoyable. No matter what level each participant was working at, the instructors met us where we were and offered constructive, individualized feedback that helped us grow.

What stood out to me the most was how approachable and encouraging they were. Even when addressing areas for improvement, the feedback was always clear, respectful, and solution-oriented, making it much easier to take in and apply. I never felt judged; only supported in becoming a better instructor. Overall, the program exceeded my expectations. It was organized, thoughtful, and deeply focused on helping us uphold the standards of classical dressage instruction. I came away feeling inspired, better equipped, and grateful to have been part of such a high-quality educational experience.
