Susann started riding in her hometown of Karlsruhe, Germany, under classical Master Egon von Neindorff, she earned her Silver and Bronze certification, Reiterabzeichen and Bereiter. In 1995, Susann moved to Maui, HI, where she was a founding member of the Hawaii State Dressage Society. In 1999, Susann moved to California and earned her USDF Bronze and Silver Medals. Continuing her education, she became a USDF Certified Instructor through Second Level in 2000 and was certified at Third and Fourth level in 2014. She became a USDF L Graduate in 2017. Her business, Regal Equestrian, is located at Courtship Ranch in Lake View Terrace, California.
How long have you been involved in the sport?
I’ve been involved in the sport since 1984.
How long have you been a USDF member?
I’ve been a USDF member since 1999.
What made you decide to participate in the USDF L Education Program?
I decided to participate in this program because I wanted to understand the judge`s perspective.
How long did it take to complete the program, start to finish?
The program took about a year- we started with workshops in the fall of 2016 and finished late summer 2017.
Do you plan to further your dressage education and to continue to apply what you learned in the program to become a licensed official?
I would definitely like to become a licensed judge.
Do you serve as a judge for schooling shows in your capacity as an L Graduate? If so, on average, how many per year?
I do judge schooling shows, up to three shows a year, and jump on every opportunity I can find!
What impact did the program have on your dressage knowledge?
It makes you a better rider and improves test riding tremendously. I have a better understanding of rules, biomechanics, and judging methodology.
Have you participated in or completed other USDF programs? Describe.
I have participated in the USDF Instructor/Trainer Program and achieved my USDF certification through Fourth Level. I have also attended several Adequan®/USDF FEI-Level Trainers Conferences.
Tell us about your horse(s).
I’ve been showing my client’s horses- a Lusitano stallion through Prix St Georges and a Swedish Warmblood gelding through Third Level. In January 2020, I purchased a promising four-year-old gelding by Sir Donnerhall that I found last year in Germany. I’m excited to develop this talented youngster through the levels and will hopefully start his career in the show ring this fall.
