A friend had encouraged me to give eventing a try, and I knew in order to be competitive, one needed a strong dressage score. I had dabbled in hunter shows and am an avid foxhunter, so the jumping and cross country wasn't an issue—it was starting from scratch with dressage.

An exciting week was planned...  Juniors and Young Riders (ages 14-21) from across the country had converged on Traverse City, Michigan, for North America’s premier equestrian competition: the FEI North American Youth Championships (NAYC)!  After the 2020 cancellation, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone was especially excited to be back for the show. Then, they checked the weather forecast and saw a storm was on the horizon.

My goals and aspirations were turned on their head in 2010, when a ranching accident resulted in the loss of my left hand. Three months after my accident, I weaned myself off all medication so that I could ride out with my crew to work bulls in the fall. I have been riding and starting colts ever since, never looking back.
