The winsome Welsh Pony and Cob! We are celebrating this breed as our September Breed of the Month on YourDressage! We recently asked our social media followers to share a photo of their favorite Welsh Pony, Cob, or Welsh cross and tell us a little about them for a chance to be featured on YourDressage, and they sure delivered! Stay tuned all month long as we will be sharing stories and galleries from folks who love this breed.
Did you know that dressage riders who choose a Welsh Pony or Cob as their dressage mount are eligible for special awards through the Adequan®/USDF All-Breeds Awards program, as The Welsh Pony and Cob Society of America, Inc. is a participating organization?
Belle Amie Maserati (Sparks Will Fly x Fellner’s Ferrari/Toandos Mountain Man) bred by Allison Skornik- 2023 NDPC 3rd level AA champion. 2019 Oregon Dressage Society Dressage President’s Choice Horse of the Year, state champion at second level and USDF all breed award champion WPCSA half welsh – AA and open. He is a Region 6 celebrity, the king of serving humble pie, my best friend, and the cutest (and sassiest) thing on 4 legs. Mozzie is the best worst boy in the world, and I love him with my whole heart ❤️ Photo by Ella Chedester Photography – Hannah S.Quillane Accolade, section D Welsh Cob Stallion owned and trained by Jenny Knight. USDF All breed winner in hand and undersaddle. 4 year old horse of the year finalist. – Amy R.My Half Welsh Pony, JAG Lady Pegasus+/ by Glyncadno Fairy King pictured just the other month at 28 years old! She is my 🦄 and been the best partner for 28 years ❤️ She is second generation bred by my mother Kathy Gilker. She was schooling 3rd level dressage even when she was 22 years old. She did pony club, miles of trail rides, schooled up to 3’3” over fences and traveled all over the east coast teaching hundreds of riders. – Megan T.My partner in crime for 14 years, Castleberrys Gavin! – Erika M.My welsh cob/hanoverian cross, Ffrewyn Hywel, as a yearling! He’s just two now and will be my up and coming dressage prospect. He was 4th at 4th level nationally in National Dressage Pony Cup small horse last year. Along with 5th in the Regional Championships. We are holding strong at 3rd place at PSG this year and gearing up for Regional Championships. Truly the horse of a lifetime. ☺️ – Amy H.We love our welsh ponies! Meet stallion GG Bit of a Lad! – Suzannah W.Duet P. Owned by Bonnie Kearny. Ridden by Aubrey Adler. Showing 3rd level. As the trainer’s (Pam Pentz) assistant, I trained this lovely mare from start to 3rd level. She always scored well and consistently won the all breeds award from training to 3rd level as well as many NDPC awards. Such a talented pony. – Audrey A.We love Rosie Mai and are so glad her family shares her! – Courtney C. Read about Rosie Mai hereGallod Ffantastic, Sec D Welsh Cob. Multi USDF All-breed Champion through PSG with Vintage Cup top 5’s. Over 30 WDAA World Championship titles levels 2 through 5 – Joann W.My son has owned his Welsh Cob, Ditto Comet since he was 5. They have grown up together from walk-trot to eventing beginner novice level. Comet spends his summers representing the breed at the Kentucky Horse Park in their breeds barn. Comet still fox hunts first field at the age of 16 and can turn in lovely dressage test. – Heather R.Madoc All Dun. Welsh Cob Section C mare by Kentchurch Chime – Julie M.This is EV Elinor❤️ 12 years old Welsh Cob mare. I’ve waited all my life for her (I’m a trainer, daughter got all the best horses growing up!😉). At the moment she is my inspiration and drive as I just had a double mastectomy and reconstruction a week ago due to breast cancer. She’s perfect and fun size! – Genna G.Madoc Mari (Lidgett Meredith x Madoc Gwyneth), my long time Welsh cob partner, has achieved many victories. From being crowned champion or reserve champion at every level from training level to FEI Intermediare I from 2016-2024, to Reserve Champion at the American Eventing championships Beginner Novice in 2019. This mare is more than I could have asked for. – Kalie B.It’s hard to pick a favorite as I’ve had several Welsh cob partners over the years. If I must narrow it down, my 10 year-old, section D Welsh Cob gelding Annwylid Dare to Dream, aka, Junior is the bomb. He’s fourth generation from my retired breeding program. He is currently competing at fourth level with aspirations to give Prix St. George a try next show season. Like his sire, I backed and started him and have competed him through the levels. He’s typical of the breed in that he will do anything I ask. I just have to ask correctly 😉 He will be the third Welsh Cob I’ve taken to FEI in recognized competition from backing. I am absolutely owned by this breed because it’s hard to beat their size of heart or their sense of humor. – Lisa D.5 year old gelding Welsh cross – Rachel E.Castleberrys Echo (Castleberrys Cadence x *Rhosyr Ebony) is the senior stallion at Vaquera Equine. Echo has proven his versatility as a performance stallion and also a sire. Echo was the 2022 Working Ranch Challenge overall champion and the 2022 Welsh of The Year! Echo also competed in local dressage shows in 2023 and ended up reserve high point. In 2023 Vaquera’s Hope Ffloats (Castleberrys Echo x Castleberrys Ffrangipani) was inspected with the Belgian Warmblood Society and was the high point pony of the entire North American tour with an 88! She is now in training for endurance riding and proving to be a great fit. We love our Welsh cobs and are so excited to them out in many arenas! Photo by Samantha Dawn Ebeling – Amanda F.
