Submitted by Meghan Malloy: Rook is a five year old gelding from Calico Mountains, Nevada, who I competed in the Mustang Classic with in 2025! He is now living with his lovely owner in Kentucky!
Mountaineering Mustangs! Throughout the month of January, we are featuring Mustangs and Mustang crosses! We recently asked our social media followers to share a photo of their favorite Mustang or Mustang cross partner, and tell us a little about them for a chance to be featured in an upcoming gallery highlighting these American icons. Check out some of the superstars they love to dance with.
Valkyrie (Kára) is my 2017 mustang mare. Born in holding in Nevada, I got her from the IA as long yearling. She is showing First 3 and schooling second level. We also do eventing and she has been Area 1 Schooling Horse Trial Champion in Pre-Elementary through Advanced Elementary. Looking to go Beginner Novice this upcoming season. – Tracey S.CF Angioletta mustang mare trained to PSG, 24 yo now and retired. Been in the same home since adopted as around 2yo 🥰 – Catherine B.“Better Than Your Ex” – Remington Antelope Valley HMA. 2016 Gelding. Remington was shown at training level this year and shows potential to move up in his third year showing. – Kierra G.Apache, AKA, Meatball. Happily retired after schooling up to 3rd level. He went from being just a little Meatball to being one of the hardest working horses (pony) I’ve had the privilege to ride and love. We went from Iowa to Florida and everywhere in between, he has a heart of gold. – Hannah O.Olaf has been my partner since 2020. Our journey wasn’t the smoothest starting out with having to start him all over as a dressage pony! But we ended up loving each other and all the quirks that came with us. He has been one of the most reliable horses I’ve known, both willing to take care of you, but call you out if you’re being lazy. We are both 19 now, but when he was younger and willing, he was down for anything. He would do eventing, hunters, and fox hunting. This little pony took me all the way to GAIGS in training and to VHSA Finals and rode his heart out. Now he enjoys his semi-retired life of doing dressage, trail rides, and bare back rides living his best life! He truly lives up to his name now, loving cold weather and lots of warm hugs! I love my mustang and couldn’t ask for a better one! 💕 – Teagan N.Cerys, my 2018 mare from Eagle Nevada. She was my first experience with mustangs. I have had her since she was roughly three and completely wild, and we just debuted at 4th level last month. She also enjoys jumping! – Cameron D. Read about Cameron’s adventures with her mustangs Cerys and Falx in Mild to WildPixel – 4yo from Massacre Lake CA – Sam V.RU Marley is from North Stillwater HMA in Nevada. He was rounded up at his dam’s side. He was adopted into the Rutgers University Young Horse Program as a yearling. I bought him from one of those students in 2013. He thought I was nuts when we started his dressage training as he’d been learning to jump and going out on trails. 😀 Today, while only at schooling shows, we are showing FEI (PSG and I1). If he had a more experienced rider, he’d be even further along~ Absolutely adore this horse! – June B.Meeko, 2015 Adobe Town WY HMA Mustang. Adopted him after the 2018 Ft. Worth Extreme Mustang Makeover, he’s been all over the country with me. The best boy ever and an amazing dressage partner! I always joke that he’s much more talented than I am (and by joke, I mean am completely honest – he is! 😂) – Jane T.Reata, Diamond Nevada. 4mo out of holding, 16 rides – Izaak N.I have 2. This one is RoxxStar and she is now retired. Shw is from Wyoming and we did it all, from dressage to fox chasing. She was lovely in dressage but she adored jumping. The baby is now 6 and is coming along nicely. She just took the championship in her division in a three phase. It was her first ever show that we did! Big dreams! She has some lovely potential. – Diana W.Belle – Be Our Guest – Amy T.Legendary Levon, who we call Leo, is originally from Rock Springs, Wyoming. He is schooling 2nd level dressage, and loves it. He accompanied his owner/rider Casidy to the 2025 US Dressage Finals. While he loves dressage, he is also happy jumping and going for trail rides, as long as he is with his Casidy. They make a great pair, he is an amazing equine partner. – Wendy J.My 5 year old mustang “Nash” we both did our very first dressage show the beginning of this year and has only been under saddle for 1 year! ❤️ – Kylie B.Geronimo is a 5 year old gelding from Black Rock Mountains NV who I competed in the 2024 mustang classic! He now lives in Louisiana doing dressage and working eq with his owner! – Meghan M.My Mustang “Thor the Mustang” and I are in Region 6. When I got him at 8years old from an animal shelter in San Diego he was only halter broken. I trained him for endurance first while my husband was stationed in San Diego and when we moved back to Washington state in 2014 we started training in dressage and western dressage. I was able to earn my bronze on him and part of my bronze freestyle bar before he retired to be a school master, which at 24years old he does happily. His HMA is from the Carter Reservoir Mustangs. He’s my absolutely heart horse and one of a kind! – Jessy O. Read about Thor and one of his riders in Dancing With ThorVincent, our 6 year Triple B Mustang who is destined for the dressage ring 😍 – Amanda H.Hawk is my 15 year old mustang from Antelope Nevada. Last season we showed in 4-3 with scores in the low to mid 60s. We are working to develop more cadence in his gaits and hope to show in the FEI next season. – Rebecca H.Vienna, Choke Cherry, UT HMA, 2022 Fort Worth Extreme Mustang Makeover Champion and Fan Favorite turned youth mount with my daughter. They can ride all training level tests bridleless! 🤎 – Jacqueline O.
I’m in awe of all of the riders and their mustang partners!
