In this quick read, a rider shares how she conquered her fear of judgment with the help of a kind corner in the equestrian community and a sweet mare with a will to please.

Growing up without horses, I longed for the day I could call one my own. Despite financial limitations, my family did their best, taking me to horse camp and arranging trail rides whenever possible. But it wasn’t just about riding; it was about fulfilling a dream deeply rooted within me since childhood.

Yet, alongside this dream was a struggle with weight. Countless battles with fluctuating pounds left me grappling with self-esteem issues. The thought of riding in my twenties filled me with apprehension – fearful of judgment and doubting my abilities. However, the equestrian community welcomed me with open arms, instilling the courage to pursue my passion.
Amidst the challenges of the pandemic, I embarked on a journey to find my equine partner. Fate led me to a red roan Appaloosa broodmare, defying all my preconceived notions. Despite being diagnosed with equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM), a progressive neurological disease, upon arrival, our bond only grew stronger through adversity.
Navigating the uncertainties of starting a horse from scratch, I turned to every resource available, determined to realize my childhood dream. With patience and perseverance, my mare and I forged a bond built on trust and mutual understanding.

As we ventured into the world of dressage, anxiety threatened to derail our ambitions. Fears of judgment and insecurities about appearance loomed large. Yet, amidst the nerves, I found solace in the support of friends made along my journey.
On the day of our first show, loaded with apprehension, we took the leap. With each stride, I felt the weight of doubt lift as we gracefully executed our test. The cheers of friends echoed in the arena, reminding me that victory isn’t just about the ribbons – it’s about the journey, the bond forged, and the courage to defy expectations.
As we continue to hone our skills, I’m reminded that dreams don’t have an expiration date. With determination and my steadfast companion by my side, we’ll continue to defy the odds and show the world what two old souls are truly capable of.
