We are celebrating the Marvelous Morgan as our April Breed of the Month on #YourDressage! We recently asked our social media followers to share a photo of their favorite Morgan or Morgan cross, and tell us a little about them, for a chance to be featured on YourDressage! Throughout the month of April, we will also be sharing stories from folks who love this breed.
Dressage riders who choose a member of this versatile breed as their mounts are eligible for special awards through the Adequan®/USDF All-Breeds Awards program, as the American Morgan Horse Association is a participating organization!
I love love love all of my dressage morgans!! They are just my absolute favorite breed for every discipline, but they really rock it in the dressage arena! Pictured here is Owlwood Wild Valentine GCH, showing I1 in open competition! Jag, as he’s known around the barn, competes with me in the FEI divisions, and also carries my students through the lower levels. He’s really a special horse, as a good Morgan always is! – Deanna L.My 6 year old Morgan, Ensigns Select (Ensigns Majestic Heir X SC Vermont Maid Lauriet), also known as Luca. For 2024 he was Training level Champion in both the Open and Amateur divisions for the USDF Morgan All Breeds Awards, Training Level Champion for the 2024 Morgan Dressage Association (MDA) Awards of Excellence, and AMHA Open Competition Training Level Champion. I am excited for our first level debut this year! – Elisabetta M.A Smooth Jazz Affair 4yr old Morgan mare, ready to make her dressage ring debut this year. After eventing my older Morgan mare for the last few years, I am excited to be bringing along this young mare who loves all things dressage. She’s smart and sassy, and was supposed to become a saddle seat show horse. She had other plans and won her way into my sport Morgan farm with her charismatic personality and smarts. This mare has been so fun to start and train, she is everything a Morgan is described to be with the added swagger of being a chestnut mare. – AE E.Indian Creek Nathan Hale GCH✨ – Alexa R.Audacity my fabulous Morgan cross bred by Heidi Scholes of Groveland MA who I had the great privilege to partner with from three days old through the CDI Grand Prix level. Shorty also helped educate some of my students and earn their medals in his later years, and and was retired quite sound. He is now 28 and resides at Three Bays Farm in PA and enjoys his days with his pasture buddies ❤️ – Cindi W.“Tito” had a great 2024 show season! Armada Captain Morgan (Treble’s Tanqueray X MEM Playmate) earned: Second Level Adult Amateur Champions in the 2024 Morgan Dressage Association (MDA) Awards of Excellence, Amateur Owner Synergy Award (given to the individual with the highest average score from among the Individual MDA Level Awards), Second Level Champion in both the Open and Amateur Divisions for the USDF Morgan All Breeds Awards, and finished 8th in the GAIG USDF Region 8 Adult Amateur Second Level Championships. Armada Captain Morgan’s breeders, William and Carolyn Johnson of Fort Edward, New York won the MDA Breeder Award – Billie T.Callie’s Gold to Behold, aka Blondie. 22 years old in this photo and will be celebrating her 30th birthday this June. She LOVED her job and if it were up to her she’d still be riding and competing 🥰♥️ – Stephanie S.My beloved partner, UC Irish Rhapsody, owned by Lisa Halloran Cox. – Cathy H.DVF Kootenai Ice (Icey) 🧊 – Uphill Dressage LLCMy Morgan x 5 yr old mare! – Sierra C.Boxford Ba Zzinga competes in both classical and western dressage. He’s won high point awards in both divisions thru AMHA and Indiana Dressage Society – Leah B.Windfield Fairy Dust today! – Valerie W.Immortal Honour (Shamrock Honour x Immortal Command) – Spike. He was bred by Dennis O’Connell back in 2024 to be a pleasure driving horse. We did everything from training level eventing to dressage to hunter paces to beach rides to lots of trail rides. He’s fully retired now due to ringbone but every once in a while I get on to go for a walk around our fields. He’s the type of Morgan you can point and shoot and he’ll do anything for you. – Mary J.My 19yo gelding KS Bluestem B All U Can B – Kayla M.Promise Picasso–5 year old Morgan who won some nice awards last year at Training and 1st Level, including USDF All Breeds Morgan Reserve Champion at Training Level. He has the best quirky personality–no grooming kit is safe from his hoof–he will tip it over with heavy eye contact to draw you back into his space bubble! In addition to being a fun dressage partner, he enjoys trail rides and jumping subway sandwich sized jumps (he’d go higher if not for his chicken rider!). – Erin B.Me and Zee after our last class – He’s a wonderful stallion – Lindsey B.He has since passed, but my once in a lifetime horse, Billy. Registered Morgan name was Bildaire Beau McPeak, was registered with the USDF as Guten Morgen. Won All Breeds one year at 1st Level. ❤️ When this picture was taken he was 32 and still gave me a run for my money! – Karen T.Eclipse is a grade Morgan from Craigslist. I got as a project horse in 2016 to train, riding her for almost 2 years falling in love w dressage. I enjoyed her as my personal horse preparing her to be a solid citizen for her new to be family. I sold her and use the money to pay for my entire shoeing school loan. I kept in touch and they needed to sell her years later, so I consigned her. I used that money to go on a once in a life time trip w my heart horse. That was during a time I didn’t have the budget but I knew she gifted that to me…THEN just 18 months later I get a call his wife doesn’t wanna ride, can I sell her for them. I got her back for a tune up, and to sell, bur she never left.. I called her Clips, like a clipped horseshoe, for obvious reasons…but now I realize she has lived up to her name and eclipsed into my life just when I needed her most. 🥰😍
Ps my FIRST dressage show I had no clue, not a one…I pull up LATE, got saddled, and t was my turn! I rode my intro A and B, and we got 66.6% which I didn’t even understand was phenomenal for my first time down centerline…want to know what’s funny. That was 8 years ago and I still haven’t beaten that score in my current life!
Morgan’s are incredible family horses. Clips unfortunately has a serious case of DSLD so she is semi retired to kid/parade/walk/kids rides. Everyone in the town adores her, she has fans come from all over to feed snacks daily. – Analise R.Sheradin’s Timeless- 2006 gelding, bred by Nancy Rebman. Owned by me since 2011. He’s not the most perfect example of a dressage horse 🥴 He’s my little sewing machine guy and we do what we can! I am grateful for all the opportunities to win fancy ribbons, have a great time with friends, and create memories. (PC Winslow Photography LLC) – Anna C.Cowboy’s Moon is a sweet and loving Morgan-cross who is just beginning his dressage journey. With his natural talent and enthusiasm, Cowboy also has a passion for jumping. He is the most willing and kind partner, always eager to learn and give his best in everything we do together. I’m excited to see where our journey takes us! – Ava B.What I love most about the Morgan is their heart- they always are willing to try hard for their people. I also love the breed’s desire to interact with their people. In addition, they can do anything you ask of them because they are so versatile. It’s such a great breed and is the most underrated in the dressage world in my humble opinion. Atwood Here We Go Again (MEM The Patriot x Perfect Cut by Cartier). – Kelly G.Smokey’s Gentle Spirit was a rescue horse as a weanling and is now my trusted dressage partner and best boy. We had a great year-horse of the year honors, First Level in 2024 -and are working toward Second Level in 2025. He is honest, kind, fun and oh so smooth 🥰 – Terri M.MyLark Sundance Robin, a 2021 Lippitt Morgan! After a long search for the right movement, I found my two-year-old stud (now gelded) with a great mind, a clean vet check, and a playful, sweet personality. I knew I wanted a smaller ammy-friendly horse I could ride and enjoy anywhere, especially after seeing more “seasoned” riders having to work hard to keep up with their warmbloods. We’ve spent the last two years on groundwork, taking it slow, and we’re finally starting under saddle this month! While we’re aiming for the local dressage scene and 3rd level, Mano’s flashy gaits and attention-grabbing personality have us dreaming bigger! – Jenna T.My girl and I before a couple years of setbacks. Now she’s baking another hopeful star for me 🥰 – Cori O.-S.Myself and Freya (Anthony’s Marilyn Monroe) a coming 6 year old mare I have owned since a weanling and have had the pleasure of starting myself! 2025 will be the first year showing recognized and we have big plans for the National Dressage Pony Cup! – Paige F.
